Welcome

Our new home

July 23, 2019

2019 is a year of new beginnings. Preston starts his masters program, we get married, we move into a new home together. So many new starts and endeavors are happening this year. It’s probably going to be the most exciting fall and winter of our entire lives, and we are already preparing for 2020 to feel very slow and uneventful in comparison.

One of the most new and tangible facets of all this new, is our condo. Around March, we became the owners of our little built-in-1960 condo, and have been working on fixing it up since. On the last day of June, we moved Preston into the condo, and I will follow in December after the wedding. It’s so exciting to finally have a physical place together! Being able to text Preston and ask if he is “home” is thrilling.

We are already loving it, and I am spending as much time as possible there. It’s in our favorite neighborhood in all of Knoxville, and we still can’t get over how perfect it all is. There’s a little restaurant right beside of us, a church we are going to try out is in walking distance and the most beautiful park in Knoxville is in our backyard. We are so happy.

One of the most exciting parts of the home making process is furniture. I didn’t realize how expensive furniture and decor was due to my college quality only shopping thus far in life, but wow, are we learning that curtains and mirrors and tables do not come cheap. Decorating is going to be a slow process, but that is working out perfectly for us!

We used the oven to bake cookies for the first time a few nights ago, and it was so much fun. We put together a shelf for our storage closet, and you would think we were at a theme park by the smiles on our faces. I love that Preston makes even the most mundane activities fun.

I included one of the first photos of our living room area to show the very basics of the space, but I am hoping to do a full blog post dedicated to showing the condo. It’s definitely a work in progress, so that post could be delayed until January.

In the mean time, I share some sneak peaks over on my Instagram if you want to follow along there!

Ingredients:
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 4–6 lemons), or more if you like it super tart!
- ¾ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 4 cups cold water
- Ice
- Lemon slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and the sugar. Heat over medium, stirring until sugar is completely dissolved to make a simple syrup. My grandma just put the sugar directly into the lemonade which was so delish! But I played around with doing this and think it incorporates really well.

Let cool, then mix with lemon juice and remaining 3 cups of cold water. Optional! The tiniest dash of vanilla extract and very thinly sliced lemons.

Taste and adjust sugar or water if needed.

Serve over ice and garnish with lemon slices.

I also made her brown butter broccolini from the same cookbook. Delish!
