I am still chugging along with my reading goal well! I am so happy that this summer has revived my interest in reading, and I hope that I make time to read every year following.
Here’s what I have read in June. Note- I listened to all these on Audiobook except The Altruists and Educated. If you haven’t given audiobooks a go yet, I highly recommend trying it!
My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsela
I listened to this as an audiobook, and it was pretty good! I thought the beginning was better than the end, but overall it was a good read. The lesson of the book is to not believe everything you see on Instagram or on the surface. I don’t love cheesy endings, and I found the last little half of this book to be pretty cheesy.
This was a true story, and I really enjoyed it. It was about a woman who grew up in Idaho and was not allowed to attend school because of her father’s paranoia of the government. It was eye opening and really made me appreciate the value of education more. I highly recommend this one, and if you like serious books, read this as soon as possible!
I did not finish this book. Technically, I guess I didn’t “read” it in June because of that, but I thought it was worth listing and explaining. I did not like this book at all. Usually, almost every book is a slow start for me, but this one was unbearable. There were a lot of weird moments in it, and the build up was long and boring. I returned it to the library before I had gotten halfway through. Maybe the ending redeemed the beginning, but I am honestly not sad about quitting it.
This book goes back and forth between two mysteries happening, one in the 1800s and one in the 1980s, in the real Dakota Hotel in NYC. I can’t decide if I liked this book or not. It had a slow beginning, an okay middle and an unpredictable ending. I actually didn’t suspect the big twist until the very end, and I still didn’t guess all of it before it happened! I definitely didn’t hate it, and it made me curious about the actual Dakota hotel in NYC.
The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsela
I read this one because it was available at the library, and I am glad I did! This author is perfect for a beach read or an audio book because the stories are unique and interesting without being too thought provoking. This one was about a lawyer turned housekeeper, and some of the parts were really funny. I believe most of Kinsela’s books are set in London, which I am loving lately since we are going to London for our honeymoon. I didn’t like it as much as “My Not So Perfect Life,” but it was still a good read!
Up next on my list is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I can’t say for the audiobooks because I have just been reading whatever is available on the Libby app. Let me know what you’re currently reading by messaging me on Instagram! If you’re looking for more book recs, I love reading Carly’s every month.
