Hi everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the super bowl, but if I had to guess I would say you didn’t because it was considered boring by the general population. While I have to agree, I mainly watch the super bowl for the commercials and the half time performance. Since I am a public relations major, and a lot of what we have to do can border the advertising industry, I love to critique and comment on ads. I wanted to pull some of my favorites from the super bowl and let you guys know what I think!

I loooove this one! It came on twice, and both times I couldn’t look away. From a PR/advertising perspective, I also love that each of the segments (the dog, hot tub, and power outage) could be used separately for digital or shorter spots.

This one was hilarious! I think it really appealed to a wide audience, while playing up die-hard football fans’ knowledge. My dad and I watch this ad in a completely different way and both appreciate it- my dad for the subtle play on each athlete that he can recognize from years as a fan and me for the obviously funny parts with the players I know so well like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

This one was a crowd favorite in my dorm. I think the placement of this one was ideal. It was very early on in the super bowl, which is still when the entire family is likely crowded around the TV and hanging on to every word. I loved that it made you keep watching to see which iconic car was going to be used next! It brought a feeling of nostalgia and a “pat on the back” feeling to those who could recognize every car (people love to be rewarded on their pop culture knowledge, myself included).
That’s it for my three favorite super bowl ads. I felt that there were a lot of serious toned ones this year, but overall there was a good balance. I have to throw in the Verizon first responders commercial as an honorable mention because when I visited McCann (Agency of record for Verizon) in NYC they gave us a synopsis of it and that just felt too cool when I was watching it on TV!
Thank you for reading today’s post!
