I am engaged!!!! It feels so good to say that. If you clicked on this post you may know mine and Preston’s relationship very well, but if you’re like me and just enjoy reading random engagement and couple stories then I will give some background.
Preston is one year older than me and was a sophomore in high school when we met. He had accidentally chosen to take a similar class to Home Ec (or maybe he just wanted the food we had to cook for class), and we wound up sitting next to each other on the first day of class. We were almost immediately really great friends and talked to each other every single day. One day we all took a picture since it was game day, Preston was a football player and I was a cheerleader, and I smoothly gave Preston my number so he could send me the photo. We started texting nonstop, and later on he asked if I would go to with him to our school’s winter dance. I obviously said yes, and after the dance was over he asked me to be his girlfriend. I still remember how excited I was- I am pretty sure I squealed so loud when I got in my house!
Fast forward six years later- we have made it through Preston going away to college, us going to college together, loss of loved ones, hard semesters, and yet so many smiles. No matter what has been going on in our lives we have always been each other’s very closest friend. Preston encourages me to be completely myself, and he is always 100% authentic to himself. I think that is one of my favorite things about him.
Our anniversary is on December 8, and each year we try to celebrate in a magical, Christmasy way. This year we got dressed up and took fun pictures in an iconic UT spot, went to Ruth’s Chris and had the yummiest dinner, and watch a Christmas Carol at the Clarence Brown Theatre on campus. I had wondered if Preston was going to propose that day since it was our sixth anniversary and we had been seriously talking about getting married. After the pictures, dinner, and the play, I texted my mom and said “Not going to happen tonight.”
Preston had just gotten the new Super Smash Bros game for the Switch, and I was excited to play it. He asked if I wanted to come back to his apartment and play it! I of course wanted to, but I told him that I needed to change- I had on tights and heels after all! We went by my dorm and I quickly took all my makeup off, took my contacts out and put my glasses on, and changed into a sweatshirt and leggings.
We got to Preston’s apartment, and I saw a present sitting on his couch- he wasn’t supposed to get me anything! He told me that he couldn’t help getting me something, and he had made a video to go along with the gift. I really didn’t think we were going to get engaged, so as he played the video of all our old pictures with his favorite things about me written in between the photos, I basically narrated the whole thing and wouldn’t stop talking. He then told me I could open my present, and it was the most beautiful Bible with “Loren Grace Provins” engraved on the front of it. I still didn’t think it was the moment, I just figured he didn’t want me to have to change it in a year. Then, he told me to open it up where the string was placed, and my ring was tied there right next to the “Love is patient, love is kind…” verse. Then he got down on one knee, and I can’t remember a single thing said except me saying “YES!!”
We facetimed our families who were impatiently waiting and hurried back to my dorm so I could tell my roommates. It was so special, and I don’t think I will ever forget how it all happened.
We have no real wedding plans yet, but I would love to update the blog when we decide on a few things.
I hope you all enjoyed this post!
