This year, my husband and I accidentally started a book club just between us. It has no official rules or meeting times, no formal book selection or discussion, but it has been one of the best possible things for us to start together during this year of transition in our lives. This post is all about starting a book club with your spouse and books to read with your spouse.
One of my friends shared that she was about to start The Silent Patient, and when I mentioned that it was one of the books Preston and I had both read this year, she helped me realize sharing about our little spouse book club would make an excellent post. Here we go!
Why You Should Start a Book Club with your Spouse
Starting a book club with your spouse might sound too serious, but I can assure you that it really couldn’t be more simple. We never formally set out to start this book club, but now that we’re casually doing it, I couldn’t recommend it more to anyone who will listen.
Just like with all relationships, at times it can take a little work to keep conversation alive, relevant, intentional, not focused on kids (if you have them) or the logistical process of doing life. It should be easier than it is, but I think finding ways to spark conversation around someone you literally live with or have been with for 10+ years isn’t always intuitive.
Spending intentional time reading the same book, fiction, nonfiction, self help, the genre doesn’t matter, has given us so much to talk about. This can also be done with a TV show you’re watching together, but there’s something special about reading it separately, waiting for each other to finish it, asking questions as one person gets deeper and deeper into the book and more.
How to Start a Book Club with your Spouse
For our little book club, it really just started when I told Preston that I really thought he would like a fiction book I had just finished. He (to my surprise) gave it a shot, and he finished it so quickly. I started asking him questions while he was reading based on which part he let me know he was at, and we loved talking about what he thought as he went along vs. what I was thinking at the time I read it.
To me, this is even better than a traditional book club, because you almost get to “meet” daily and do a kind of read along edition of book club.
When he finishes the book, we love to take 10 or so minutes to just talk about our favorite and least favorite parts of the book, our final ratings, favorite characters, etc. It is the least formal conversation ever, but for some reason it is so much fun. It also adds so much more we can talk about in the future when something relates to a book or plot we’ve both read.
