Welcome

How I keep my dorm semi-clean

April 4, 2019

Hello everyone!!

Today I want to talk about cleaning! Love it? Hate it? In between? Well, I am definitely in between. Nothing feels better than a tidy room, but I am not one to freak out if things aren’t spick and span. I have to admit that I keep my dorm room, bathroom and kitchen pretty clean with all things considered. After three years of living on campus, I have found some pretty tried and true strategies to keep my small room livable. Here are my top five tips for how to keep a smaller space clean!

1. Make your bed every morning- I could probably count on one hand how many times I consistently made my bed before college. I make my bed every single day now, and it has changed my life. Things can look pretty messy in a short amount of time in a dorm. An unmade bed can make your spotless room look like a disaster. I make my bed every morning, right after I get out of the shower. It doesn’t have to be perfect- seriously, I toss a blanket or pillow over the wrinkles to save time 😀

2. Bed skirt- This is such a game changer. I have a bed skirt on my dorm bed, and it helps me hide so much. I have a crate for my books and notebooks, tub for my overflowing stash of sweatshirts and all my drawers under my bed. My room would look pretty messy without the bed skirt to hide everything!

3. Cut out the excess- I have a bag that I always keep in my bathroom for storing items that I want to take home. This is a huge help because it allows me to easily pick up all the things I no longer need at my dorm whenever my mom or dad come up for the evening. You definitely don’t want useless things piling up in a small space.

4. Quick clean- I try to take five minutes every night before bed to put away my clothes, clean off my desk and tidy up my bathroom. I do not do this every night because that’s just not realistic for me. Do I wish I did it every night? Yes. A clean room makes me so much more productive.

5. Clorox Wipes- My dorm would be covered in germs if it weren’t for these! I try to take a clorox wipe to  the table where I eat and microwave once a week or so. They don’t take up much space, and they can come in handy when you’re in a bind! I also have a swiffer duster in my cleaning arsenal. Windex is also in my supply, but I really don’t use it. I will be putting it in the take home bag soon!

I hope you all enjoyed these tips. I live in a bigger dorm than what most would think of when college housing comes to mind, but things still get pretty tight with three girls living in one space. I am lucky to have roommates that help with weekly cleaning and keep everything so tidy! Let me know if any of these tips worked for you!

Ingredients:
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 4–6 lemons), or more if you like it super tart!
- ¾ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 4 cups cold water
- Ice
- Lemon slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:
In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and the sugar. Heat over medium, stirring until sugar is completely dissolved to make a simple syrup. My grandma just put the sugar directly into the lemonade which was so delish! But I played around with doing this and think it incorporates really well.

Let cool, then mix with lemon juice and remaining 3 cups of cold water. Optional! The tiniest dash of vanilla extract and very thinly sliced lemons.

Taste and adjust sugar or water if needed.

Serve over ice and garnish with lemon slices.

I also made her brown butter broccolini from the same cookbook. Delish!
