When I was in elementary school I was obsessed with the Barbie movies, and my absolute favorite was Barbie and the Nutcracker. I also have been to see the Nutcracker ballet, and it was full of Christmas magic. So, imagine my joy when I saw Disney was releasing a Nutcracker movie AND Kiera Knightley was to be in it. Eeeek! Cue excitement. The opening weekend finally came out, and Preston and I went to see it. Here is our movie review of the Nutcracker and the Four Realms.
Also before we get into the review, when we were watching the previews at the movie theatre, we literally wanted to go see every single movie. The best movies come out during these last few months of the year, and I am so excited to see more movies and write more reviews!
My review:
It. Was. Amazing!! I loved it so much, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. The plot is not the same as the Barbie movie or the ballet, but I am so glad it is a new story. It put me in such a Christmas mood, and it was definitely a feel good movie. It is not groundbreaking or thought provoking, and it may not be an Oscar contender, but if you’re looking for a fun, seasonal date night, give it a go!
The costumes were amazing, the acting was really good, and the plot was interesting and not too long.
One thing I will add, this movie is not for people who have a deathly fear of mice. Let’s just say one part of the film almost made me sick, and I am not super afraid of mice.
Rotten Tomatoes ranked it in the 30% area, which I really disagree with!
Preston’s review:
I would say that the Nutcracker was good, it beat my expectations! The visuals were very nice, it definitely made you get in the holiday mood. The music was amazing and I like how they incorporated the classic pieces with the film. The only downside was the story, it felt forgettable! The Nutcracker was meant to be a mournful story that was as grey as the winter skies, but the Disney adaption has been, well, Disney-fied. There are less pensive thoughts as the melancholy of the original work was dulled to a brief tug of the heart strings in the theater.
That’s it for our review of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms! I hope you all are enjoying this movie time series, and I am looking forward to many more as winter movie season approaches!
