We recorded a virtual book club podcast episode this week, and I couldn’t help but share the book tag I created for the episode here. If you’re looking for blog post ideas, I think this book tag would be really fun to incorporate into your content. I’ll share the blank questions at the bottom so you can easily copy and paste into your blog.
If you want to hear more about my answers and my friend Alyson’s answers, make sure to listen to our podcast episode! Let’s get into the book tag.
What is your reading journey?
I have been a frequent reader from a very young age. My mom would actually ground me from reading because it was all I wanted to do, I couldn’t really be “punished” by taking away electronics because I loved reading so much! This sounds drastic, but she honestly didn’t have to worry about me being a good reader or not.
The first books I really remember reading were anything from the American Girl Doll series, Junie B. Jones, Ramona and Beezus, you know the drill. Then I picked up Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games in middle school. I also got really into anything YA, especially anything by Ally Carter (especially the Gallagher Girls series!).
Things really dipped off for me in college, as what I believe happens for most others. It really is so hard to read for pleasure when you have to read so much for school. Then I couldn’t pick back up with anything during the pandemic (writing this in March 2021) because my attention span seemed so low. I read 27 books in 2020, and I set 30 as my goal for 2021.
Well, not even three full months into the year, and I’m already at 23 books and counting!
Do you dog ear books? How do you mark your place?
Just say no to dog ears! Honestly my favorite way to mark my place is to use the book sleeve (if it’s hardback) or use a random piece of paper if it’s paperback. I cannot keep up with bookmarks!
Do you read the last page of the book first?
NOOO. I don’t even know how people do this. Or why? How does anyone even think to do this? I’m just too committed to surprises!
Your ideal reading set up? Can you read in the car?
Ahh my ideal reading setup is either in bed right before I go to sleep or sitting by the window on my couch on a sunny afternoon. I actually dislike reading outside- the wind gets flipping pages around gets too annoying!
I can read so easily in the car and always have been able to! I never get car sick.
Favorite genre?
Historical fiction is always a favorite, especially anything with a romance element involved.
Least favorite genre?
This isn’t technically a genre, but anything set in a dystopian society really freaks me out. I just begin overthinking everything. It doesn’t bother me too much if any kind of fantasy is involved, but a dystopian society set in a realistic world… yikes.
Favorite book tropes/themes that you’re a sucker for?
I explained this well in the podcast episode, but I love any kind of book that has at least one element of romance. I also love when the romance is kind of forbidden or the two parties dislike each other at first. I do start to get annoyed if the dislike is drawn on for too long, though.
Favorite author?
Kristin Hannah has just been killing it lately. Everything she writes is so raw and vulnerable and realistic. I don’t think any author is writing anything as realistic as her. Everything is set in such an interesting time and place, and there’s always a little romance involved. My favorite book personally is The Great Alone.
Favorite classic book?
Anne of Green Gables is my go to. I go through phases of being obsessed with Anne of Green Gables, and it’s the only book I have in a collectible edition.
Favorite and least favorite book to movie translation?
This is tough. I honestly think Twilight was a really good book to movie translation, aside from the fact that you have to have read the book to be Team Edward- they just don’t do him justice in the movies.
My least favorite is probably A Wrinkle In Time. For some reason, I couldn’t remember how badly this movie was done. I can’t even recall why it was so bad, but I remember loving the book. We all left the theatre thoroughly upset after watching it though.
Series you wish more people knew about?
This isn’t what I said in the podcast episode, but I wish more people read the Gallagher Girl series. It’s YA and pretty popular still, but I think almost anyone would like it. It’s about a secret, elite school for female spies.
