Welcome

An update on my cooking journey

June 13, 2019

I am not a chef…. yet. Before this summer, my kitchen experience included lots of baking, heating up leftovers and making soup in the microwave. My mom is the best cook, and I have watched her and talked to her while she has prepared the yummiest meals for so many years, but I rarely ever worked on the meals myself besides stirring something here and there.

This summer, I had the realization that I am about to get married, and I barely know how to make anything besides desserts. Preston is a really good cook, but I really want to do my fair share once we live together. You may have seen in a recent post that I made it my goal to learn how to cook a few basic meals this summer, and I am on my way to meeting that goal!

I am slightly limited to what I can make because my brother (who I am staying with this summer) doesn’t have a very stocked kitchen. When I moved in, the only item in the fridge was butter. He also has a handful of pots and pans but definitely not that many. Because of this, I am less likely to practice meals that take a lot of ingredients or tools needed.

Up to this point, I have perfected the meal of ground beef tacos, Mexican rice and black beans, corn on the cob, eggs (scrambled and sunny side up), a yummy sweet potato dish and the ability to heat up frozen stir fry meals from Trader Joes. This might sound like the most basic of basic, but I am extremely proud of myself! I can’t wait to grow my cooking abilities throughout the rest of the summer and when I get in a better routine with more kitchen tools! My mom gave me a cookbook to get mine and Preston’s meals written down as we go along, and I have been loving to fill that out every time I make something new.

Thanks for reading this update. If you have any recommendations of signature meals I should be able to make by the time I am a married woman, let me know on Instagram! I will hopefully have a round up of meals to share with you all at the end of the summer. I am hoping to tell them from the perspective of a first-time cook! Talk to you all soon.
